Before you can ride a motorcycle or moped on the road you must complete your compulsory basic training or CBT. This training helps to ensure you can comfortably and safely ride a vehicle on your own before you begin riding lessons at a motorcycle driving school.
CBT is not a test that you have to pass in order to ride. It is a training day designed to prepare you for the road and ensure you are able to handle a motorcycle before you begin proper lessons.
In order to prepare for your compulsory basic training, you must hold a valid UK provisional or full driving licence which enables you to ride a motorcycle. If you do not hold a UK licence, you must bring the relevant forms and documentation in order to begin your training.
It is important that you attend in the correct clothing and wear suitable shoes. Thick trousers and jackets made from materials such as denim or leather are advised as they help to protect you should you come off the bike.
Riding boots are advised however sturdy, comfortable boots are also appropriate. Trainers are not allowed and you may not be allowed to start your training if you are not dressed suitably.
Helmets may be provided at the training centre, however, you are also allowed to bring your own as long as they meet the required standards.
It would be helpful to have basic theoretical knowledge of riding a motorcycle or moped before attending your training as this may make it easier to get to grips with riding.
You should also go over the highway code and ensure your knowledge and understanding is up to date and correct as you will be expected to know and understand the rules of the road during your training.
